Greetings from the MHLC…

We’re incredibly grateful to Sophia Luna and the entire team at EdNC for highlighting our work and the role mental health literacy can play in supporting students and communities across North Carolina. This feature shines a light on our growing collaborative and our mission to make mental health literacy foundational in schools and communities.

A special thank you to North Carolina’s own Pooja S. Mehta, MPH, along with Joey Jegier, Nicole Kennedy, Huda Ismail, and Claire Bradley for sharing their perspectives about their work with the MHLC Young Adult Advocacy Council. Youth voice and empowerment are essential to this movement.

As you know, the “C” in our name stands for Collaborative. This work is bigger than any one of us and real change only happens when we work together. Since 2023, we’ve been building momentum and growing a community focused on advancing the four pillars of mental health literacy to better support youth, schools, and communities. Thank you to everyone who continues to be part of this journey.

Opioid Use Disorder is a serious mental health condition but treatment is available and research is ongoing. This article helps shed light on promising practices that help increase the odds of complete recovery.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Angel Zhong, dedicated scholar-activist and a Post-Baccalaureate Research Associate at the Research to Practice Lab, based at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.

Angel first joined MHLC in 2024 as a member of the Young Adult Advocacy Council, where she made meaningful contributions to the project focused on elevating the Mental Health Literacy (MHL) framework for youth and young adults. Beyond her role on the Council, Angel developed research and scholarship strategies to further highlight the MHLC and secure additional support for our organization. After the Council concluded, Angel officially joined MHLC as an Advisor where she continues to share her insights and leadership. 

Angel is a dedicated researcher and scholar-activist focused on health equity and intergenerational well-being. Most recently, she and her colleagues published “Promoting Alaska Native Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention in Rural Schools: A Virtual Learning Circle Approach.”
