In the session, "Making the Case for MHL in Higher Ed: First Year Experience & Student Success," Dr. Amy Bidwell, Associate Professor at SUNY Oswego makes the case for bringing mental health literacy (MHL) into higher education spaces, particularly within First Year Experience & Student Success programs.

Dr. Bidwell brings years of experience teaching nutrition, exercise physiology, and science education in higher education. Her research centers on the integration of evidence-based positive psychology strategies, goal-setting, resilience exercises, and mindfulness techniques within the academic setting, all aimed at enriching the holistic well-being of students. The MHLC Young Adult Council was created last fall to empower and amplify young adult voices and promote Mental Health Literacy (MHL) in schools and communities across the nation and around the globe.

Under the guidance of Council leadership, Council members have been co-creating a Young Adult MHL Advocacy Toolkit that is almost ready to launch. Their work focuses on the MHL-related needs, concerns, and ideas of young adults from various communities.

Soon this YA Advocacy Toolkit will be made available broadly for young adult advocacy for MHL education in schools and communities.

CEO Annie Slease, Tribal Member of Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shares Work of the MHLC

Recently, our CEO Annie Slease was featured by Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN). Annie shared how her personal story of navigating family mental illness eventually led her to help launch the Mental Health Literacy Collaborative.

The article outlines the four components of mental health literacy as well as some of the projects of MHLC, including our Commitment to Action with Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) providing no-cost MHL training to pre-service educators. Annie feels strongly about bringing MHL to all communities, but as a tribal member of CPN, she is especially passionate about serving indigenous communities.
